Storm glass with suspension

Storm glass has, as far as we know, been known since around the year 1750 and was used in sailing ships for storm warning.
The first real account of its use aboard a ship dates from Charles Darwin’s circumnavigation of the world from 1831 to 1836. On December 27, 1831, Darwin set out in the bark “HMS Beagle”, commanded by Captain Fitzroy (1805-1865), who throughout his career at sea and ashore used the Stormglass. Fitzroy advanced in the fleet to admiral. He was also a meteorologist and ended up as head of the British Meteorological Institute. Among other things, he has written the famous “Weather Book”, which popularized weather predictions and disseminated them to all layers of the population. At the height of his career, he followed a tradition in the family – he slit his throat – very dramatically!
